Ian is the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaster Distiller \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003efor the Scotch Whisky arm of \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDistell Group\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, who own the Bunnahabbain distillery. Under Ian’s guidance, Bunnahabbain has transformed itself from a production-focused distillery to a \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003equality-focused \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003eone. These days, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003echill-filtering is taboo\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, and so is coloring or anything else artificial. \u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003cbr\u003e\r\nFirst, this is a “travel retail” bottling. Experienced Whisky-lovers know that this means a full 1-liter bottle (as opposed to the 70 cl standard bottle) — basically, you get about 1\/3 more spirit than the bottles sold down at the mega mart. Second, remember that it is an \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIslay Single malt\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, so the peat smoke is present. And you know… there’s always something about Bunnahabhain Whiskies that makes us think of a roaring fire on a cold winter day. \u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003cbr\u003e\r\nThat said, Bunnahabhain Eirig Na Greine is a \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e46.3% ABV\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e bottle of Islay \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSingle Malt love\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. It is a \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003elimited edition \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003emixed up by their master blender each year, so there are a bunch of ages and casks in there. But all of those casks are \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003epremium red Wine casks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. This means that you get the body and texture \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ewithout the extra sweetness \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003eof a Sherry or Port cask. Being a special release without distillery recognition, it should not be surprising that it varies a bit from year to year. Because that’s exactly what this Whisky is — a \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003egift\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e! Semantics aside, there’s also the matter of pronunciation. \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eAuchroisk? Othrusk. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eJust so... Official distillery bottlings have been sold under the name The Singleton up until the early 21th century, in large part to free potential consumers of any potential mispronunciation headaches. \u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003cbr\u003e\r\nA force of nature, its distinguished quality is due in no small part to the land and the spring on which the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003edistillery \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003ewas built back in 1974. Seeing as this is one of the youngest such establishments in \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eSpeyside\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, even the whole of Scotland, the range of products is small. Nowadays Auchroisk is owned by Diageo, who incorporated the 10 YO into its\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e Flora \u0026amp; Fauna range\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, which promotes the company’s lesser known single malts. Good thing they did too because this dram doesn’t just blend in, it also stands out. \u003cbr\u003e\r\n \u003cbr\u003e\r\nLike the distillery itself, the Whisky is \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eyoung and fresh\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. On the one hand, it’s \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eextremely approachable\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, making for an \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eexcellent dram for newcomers\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. On the other hand, its\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e full flavour and depth\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e make this a \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003ecomplex treat \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003efor experienced aficionados.
